Reality TV Competitions and Game Shows
When watching reality TV shows, especially those in which competition is involved, I've never actually thought about their relationship to game shows. Although after last class's discussion I've been considering their similarities. I think it's very safe to assume that competition reality TV definitely has the characteristics of a game show, in that the goal of the show is to portray some kind of competition between people taken from society to gain some sort of retribution for their victory. However, I think that to say a game show is reality TV may be stretching the issue. In many reality TV competition shows there is a cast of contestants who remain on the show throughout the season. In contrast, game shows generally have different contestants each episode. Reality TV competition shows seem to have story lines that are explored throughout several episodes, whereas a game shows tend to have a new story line each episode (not to mention these story lines of the game shows are arguably much blander than those of reality TV).
Also, in my own opinion, I feel that game shows are ironically, slightly more realistic than reality TV competition shows because the I do not feel that the truth value or the 'reality' is as questionable. Reality TV seems like it would be more likely to be scripted than game shows, although I am not ruling out the possibility that game shows also have a tendency to be fake.
