I, you, and me need to get to the end FIRST
When reading the abominable snowman, I initially thought how I use to love reading these as a kid—then I realized that I remembered hating that they addressed me as if I was personal and they were able to ‘trick’ me into thinking Franz and I were ‘really’ on an expedition. What I wanted to know now is if people think this story—or any ‘adventure story’ would have the same effect if addressing another person you associate with as a character. This is to say simply that they don’t say you.
I know initially I believed that it would not work: if I decide to cancel my meeting with Carlos I have to turn to page 7…This works with You and I because I’m literally turning the pages—this notion is reminiscent of a meta’picture’ but more like text. Anyway I realized maybe it would be more interesting if you have to associate with characters—you would choose characters to agree/disagree more forward or digress with…I mean what if Carols and Franz were the characters you would side with and decide. Could this be an interesting layer to work with or would if defeat the purpose of this unique narrative that interjects the reader so cleverly?
Also I feel—and I am aware this sounds like a point that shouldn’t be made, that maybe people would actually feel the need to READ more of the book or situation to judge better what ‘they’ would do. You must read in order to say why and how you should associate and decide with character rather than jumping to the end to se if you would rather grab an ice axe that click the picture…the book is really about getting to an end as fast as possible rather than enjoying the process I think, and maybe character association rather than I and you might eliminate that and put more focus o the process rather than end result.
Flipping Right to the End...
I think the idea of choosing a character friend or associate would make the concept of choosing your own adventure significantly more interesting. The addition of this choice would increase interactivity between the player and the game and for this reason would bring in a whole new dimension to the game. However, I do not feel that it would necessarily eliminate the tendancy to flip to the last page; when a create your own adventure text is presented in book form, the knowledge that choices and future predictions are so close is enough to create anxiety regardless of agency throughout the book.
