video games and magazine ads. more meaningful than we think?
Posted December 1st, 2008 by KateitorloveitWhen we play video games there are a few things we expect from them. Mostly we expect them to be entertaining. When we were young games would often have educational themes and would force us to learn something as we played and enjoyed these games. In a way we were tricked into acquiring knowledge through a medium that we deemed fun and not so much educational. The two games that we were assigned have similiar effects. The main difference is that t now we are older we do not necessarily need things to be as fun in order to be mentally stimulated.

Posted November 17th, 2008 by KateitorloveitI am not a huge video game fan. This is because I am not good at them, I dont understand the controls and therefor do not take the time to learn or enjoy them. Instead I read books, I prefer them to movies as well as games.

unreality t.v.
Posted November 10th, 2008 by KateitorloveitReality t.v. is something that we as an audience can not seem to get enough of. The reasons are very straightforward. These are not simply characters reading a script[ or so we are told]. They are people just like us that react to odd situations that they show has placed them in. These reactions remind of us of ourselves or of people we know, and makes these shows extremely relatable. That is the main goal of these shows is to make people feel like they have things in common with the people they see on t.v.Whether or not these shows are "real" is a very different story.

can we do that? html and author intentionality.
Posted November 3rd, 2008 by KateitorloveitI found Thursday's lecture to be extremely thought provoking. We discussed the ways in which new technologies including the use of html integreates from with the content of a narrative. this brought up a very important issue and that is our ability as a reader to change the format of what it is we are reading. Many people in class argued that the reader has no right to make changes to an authors work because it defeats the purpose of reading it and changes the whole point of what we are reading. Some changes however seem inevitable.

True Fiction:oxymoron or glorious gray area?
Posted October 20th, 2008 by KateitorloveitIn reading Marie Laure Ryan's second chapter on trangressing fictional boundaries there was a particular theme that caught my attention. The main argument presented in this chapter was that of the distinction between fiction and non-fiction. Ryan does an excellent job of presenting differing views on how to make this division. Authors as well as artists of other mediums have a different idea of what constitutes fictionality. The idea that really got me intruiged and thinking however was that of the gray areas between fiction and non-fiction.

Krazy Kat sure talks funny.
Posted October 6th, 2008 by KateitorloveitOne of the more interesting aspects of the Krazy Kat cartoons is the way they speak. It seems to be a mixture of dialects. The author is very skilled at picking up on the way people speak and differences in language. I think that he uses this to make the characters more relatable. The fact that the dialect is hard to place makes it possible for more people to identify with Krazy, Ignas and officer Pup.Words aren’t stable, fixed things. They have shades of meaning and shifting connotations. He doesn’t make words up, however much he might twist them around.

meta- LittleNemo-pictures.
Posted September 22nd, 2008 by KateitorloveitMitchell's essay on metapictures brings up some very interesting points that are displayed throughout the Little Nemo comics. The most simple way to understand the concept of metapictures seems to be that it is a picture about pictures. He adresses the idea of self refernce in other forms as narratove as well. He metiones metalanguages where parodoxes and the word "I" are used as self reflexive tems where the medium relates to itself.

transcending boundaries.
Posted September 15th, 2008 by KateitorloveitThe thing that impresses me the most about Little Nemo is it's extreme versatility. This comic has elements in it that appeal to almost any audience. Throughout this class I have done the readings as well as kept up with the blogs that others have written about them and it is interesting to me that a class full of highly critical college students of varying ages coming from different backgrounds and with differing attitudes towards this class and english in general, there have been very few complaints or negative comments toward Little Nemo.
