life

Wow, they thought it was something else

So I had a specific intent with my electronic literature piece [the creative part of it] and it someone reviewed and found something different than what I meant but I liked it. I would love if you all would check it out and give me some more feedback because making it was really fun but I am not sure if everyone is getting the whole arc of the story. I will put a link at the bottom of the page. Anyways, I found that the chat the class had about what they were going to take away from the class was interesting and really made me think. All I could mutter out in class was that I would take away the points of view and apply it to cheesy novels but I think I was trying to say something a little bit more sophisticated than that. I have learned a whole new outlet for creativity. I love to create collages and an e-lit piece is like a collage full of pits of information or pictures that you can piece together however you like. You can make a different story than the author intended so much easier than if you were to read a book because there are different avenues you can take that wouldn't be offered in most text based books. I think that this equates to the fun I had making a 'zine [which is a magazine that is full of unpublished poems and essays all to convey one general message] it is just as fun. Anyways, that is how I view E-lit after taking this class.  read more »

So I have struggled with this Electronic Literature from the start the complexities of all the pieces we would look over- but after starting my very own piece I am starting to see the true concept of E-Lit [at least from my perspective and this may be a little "deep"] it's like life, you get to make different choices at each stop and then you suffer the consequence of that decision but unlike life you can web the pieces together with the site map like small memories linked together. You can't do this in real life, unless you take notes of every event you come across. The other difference is the enunciation of the choice you are to make, being strong in both regular E-Lit and Hyperlink text poems and much more subtle in real life. You as the reader or the player and as the author are left to fill in the blanks just like real life where each choice you make each day will effect the path you take to your eventual demise or the end of the proposed game.
I have been able to dive into the history of Ireland which I have always wanted an excuse to do. Trying to know enough about to reflect on it creatively has been a really fun thing to do since I enjoy history so much. Being dramatic and creative with hopes that the reader or player will understand what's going on is both exciting and extremely intimidating.  read more »

When games are not games

When I began playing Passage, the first thing that came to mind was "Yay, Zelda! Only blockier and with weird screen dimensions. And you can only play for a few minutes."  read more »

The Secret of Time

Today, I read "The Garden of Forking Paths" twice to get the gist of the story. From the beginning of this short-story I found the central idea right away. The theme is time. Time is vital to mankind. Early in the story it says, "Everything happens to a man precisely now. Centuries of centuries and only in the present do things happen." Basically, moments in a person's life exist within time. As soon as moment is experienced, that time no longer exists.  read more »
